Wondring if anyone has done this and if so, how

The problem is that when I install a customer, I retain ownership of the equipment at the customers site. But that equipment is now tied to their site and unusabe for anything else. My thinking was to move a serialized inventory item to a Fixed asset for each new customer so that I can depreciate the item. But I can't figure out how to do this and track the serial numbers or amounts.

Bets I can do so far is to use a general journal entry to move the value of the item to the fixed assets account and then an inventory adjustement for the inventory numbers.

any ideas?

thanks

Have you tried the assets module. You can add custom tabs and fields which may allow you the flexibility to add the additional information you need, like serial numbers. The module doesn't have an automated depreciation capability but you should be able to depreciate the asset through a general ledger entry and record the remaining value with the asset record. I would keep it out of the inventory database.
